Mario's outfit features a top hat, which resembles the default appearance of Cappy, a white top hat Bonneter worn by Mario in Super Mario Odyssey; the outfit itself comes from Odyssey as well. Rainbow Cruise represents the Odyssey, a giant red airship equipped with propellers that Mario and Cappy pilot in Odyssey. The Invisibility rule makes Mario invisible for a while, referencing Cappy's ability to transform himself into different hats, thus giving him a camouflaged appearance. Mario starts the battle with a Boomerang, referencing how Mario can throw Cappy like a boomerang, which allows him to attack enemies from a distance before returning to Mario.
This dapper spirit is from the Cap Kingdom CAPitol of Bonneton, joining Mario to rescue not only Princess Peach, but his sister, Tiara, as well. He can transform into all kinds of hats, including Mario’s classic red cap. He’s actually Mario’s hat in Smash, his eyes becoming visible for certain moves. See if you can spot him!
