The battle recreates the final boss sequence of Kirby's Dream Land 2; after fighting a possessed King Dedede, Kirby must confront Dark Matter in its "blade" form (represented by Meta Knight, whose sword attacks are powered up). Dark Matter sometimes unleashes powerful attacks that briefly darken the screen, represented by the critical hits and Nightmare assist trophies. The battle takes place in dark skies (reflected by the setting of the Halberd stage), and the Nightmare assist trophies and music (02 Battle) reference final bosses from the Kirby series with similar attributes to Dark Matter.
Dark Matter is a force of nature across the cosmos, turning entire planets into worlds of darkness. Why? The leader of Dark Matter, Zero, is very lonely, and jealous of all friendships across time and space, making Popstar a prime target. Pictured here is Dark Matter Blade, a form which Dark Matter can take to do battle with the defenders of Dream Land, but its true form is a ball of pure darkness with a single eye.
