The yellow Sheik puppet fighter represents Gray Fox, a cybernetic ninja wearing a yellow suit who appears as the Assist Trophy enemy. The stage is based on Shadow Moses Island, the main setting of Metal Gear Solid, which features the appearance of Gray Fox as one of the main antagonists. The stage features Metal Gear REX as a background character, referencing how Gray Fox teams up with Snake to defeat Metal Gear REX piloted by Liquid Snake before he is killed. The Move Speed ↑ rule references how Gray Fox's cybernetic exoskeleton empowered him with superhuman movement speeds and the ability to jump to great heights.
Once an ally to Solid Snake, the two found themselves on opposite sides during a disturbance in Zanzibar Land. Though Snake emerged victorious, gene therapy and cybernetic enhancements revived Gray Fox as a powerful cyborg ninja. He seeks to face Snake once again, infiltrating Shadow Moses Island to do so. In Smash, Gray Fox is an Assist Trophy, using his skills with a blade to attack foes and reflect projectiles.
