The giant purple Kirby in this fight represents Lubba, a large purple Luma who accompanies Mario on his journey in Super Mario Galaxy 2. Super Launch Stars spawn often, and Kirby starts with one, not just because they're a central tool in the Galaxy games, but because Lumas are able to transform into them (though Lubba never does this himself). The player's low gravity in this fight, meanwhile, invokes the outer space setting of the same games.

Mechanic and creator of Starship Mario, Lubba is the leader of the Lumas in Super Mario Galaxy 2. He offers his help rescuing Princess Peach from Bowser in exchange for Mario retrieving the Power Stars from all over the universe. He’s much more down-to-earth than Rosalina, more like a road trip buddy than a guardian of the cosmos.
