In Super Mario RPG, Mallow is a spellcaster who attacks enemies and supports Mario's party with special moves based on the weather—including lightning—hence Robin's favored use of Thunder, and the Lightning item's abundance. Magicant's cloudy environment represents Nimbus Land, a kingdom built atop clouds high in the sky, from which Mallow originates.

Mallow is a “tadpole” raised by the sage Frogfucius. He always felt different from his fellow tadpoles: he didn’t have a tail, couldn’t jump very high, and was a terrible swimmer. What Mallow is good at is magic, able to command the elements to aid him and Mario on their quest to save the Mushroom Kingdom from the Smithy Gang
