The grey Metal Greninja puppet fighter represents Metal Gear RAY, an amphibious Metal Gear designed to use water-based attacks. The stage is based on Shadow Moses Island, which serves as the location of the boss battle against Metal Gear RAY in Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, which appears as the background character. The music track is based on the boss battle theme song from Sons of Liberty, which features the debut appearance of Metal Gear RAY as one of the bosses. The Exploding Type items and the second battle condition reference Metal Gear RAY's ability to counter Metal Gear REX's ability to launch explosive nuclear warheads. Greninja starts the battle with a Steel Diver, which will shoot explosive torpedos, referencing how Metal Gear RAY is equipped with a high-pressure water cannon and missile launchers. Other trivia: This spirit's Weight ↑ ability makes it difficult for the player to be launched but also decreases their movement speed, referencing how Metal Gear RAY is equipped with metallic armor designed to withstand light and medium projectile assult.
Designed specifically to counter Metal Gear REX and its innumerable derivatives, Metal Gear RAY is an anti-Metal Gear, being the only Metal Gear to lack nuclear capabilities. There are two models: one able to be piloted, and a completely unmanned mass-produced version. This massed produced version was used during the Outer Haven Incident to attack Solid Snake and his allies on the USS Missouri.
