Appropriately, Metal Mario is represented by a metal Mario. The stage resembles Meta Crystal, a stage from the original Super Smash Bros.'s 1P Game where the player fights Metal Mario; it being in its Battlefield form, combined with the music, makes reference to Melee's Adventure Mode, which features a battle against a metal Mario (and, once he is unlocked, Luigi) on Battlefield, with the background track playing. The battle conditions further make reference to the fight against Metal Mario in Super Smash Bros., where he had both slow movement and increases in both attack and defense.
Originally debuting as a power-up in Super Mario 64, Metal Mario has since taken on a life of his own! While he was a boss in both the original Super Smash Bros. and Melee, he’s since taken up kart racing. As far as Smash is concerned, now anyone can become metal with the power of the Metal Box! Just be careful not to fall, as you’ll be much heavier than normal.
