The red Dark Samus represents Mother Brain, a red artificially intelligent enemy with a single ocular organism, who appears as the Assist Trophy enemy. The stage's background features magma, representing Tourian, a cavernous area with lava-filled pools where the boss battle against Mother Brain takes place in Metroid. The music track is based on the escape sequence theme song that plays immediately after defeating Mother Brain in Metroid. Dark Samus's favored Charge Shot and the Energy Output ↑ rule reference how Mother Brain attacks by firing energy blasts from her eye in Metroid: Zero Mission. Other trivia: In World of Light, the Mother Brain spirit on Dharkon's side of the Final Battle map matches with the EVE spirit on Galeem's side; both characters are artificial intelligences. This spirit's enhanced form, Mother Brain (2nd Form), features the Giant ability, referencing how Mother Brain transforms into a giant bipedal monster in Super Metroid.
Created by the Chozo, Mother Brain became self-aware and decided the only way to bring peace to the galaxy was to reduce it all to zero. Allying herself with the Space Pirates, even they don’t know she intends to wipe them all out. She appears as an Assist Trophy in Smash, attacking just like her boss fight, firing off Rinkas and her rainbow Hyper Beam.
