Originally a tiny, insect-like creature, Phazon experimentation led to it becoming this massive behemoth. Tearing its way through the Frigate Orpheon and taking up resident in its reactor core, the creature fed on the radiation until Samus came along and killed the beast. It dropped directly into the reactor, triggering a meltdown and destroying the Space Pirate frigate.
