Peach represents Pauline, the damsel-in-distress of Donkey Kong, who was originally known as "Lady" and depicted in the game's artwork as a blonde woman wearing a red dress. Her behavior in battle references how Mario must confront Donkey Kong in order to save Pauline. Mario starting the battle with a Hammer represents Mario's appearance in Donkey Kong as "Jumpman", where he can pick up a hammer to destroy any enemies in his path; his white costume comes from Super Mario Odyssey, where Pauline makes a prominent appearance. Donkey Kong, in his red costume, represents the original Donkey Kong, whose pixel form is depicted with red fur and appears as the stage element. 75m, the third stage of Donkey Kong, appropriately appears as well; the time limit references the depleting bonus counter in each stage of the game, which will remove one of Jumpman's lives once fully empty.
The first lady of the Mario series, Pauline was Mario’s girlfriend in the original Donkey Kong, caught in a love triangle between man and beast. Though she and Mario eventually split, they’re still on good terms. Pauline went on to become the mayor of New Donk City and a talented singer, with her debut “Jump Up, Super Star!” becoming an instant classic.
