The stage represents the first stage of "The Subspace Emissary", which takes place on a single floating platform in a crowded stadium and first features the Shadow Bugs as enemies. The music track is based on the theme song played during the Subspace stages in "The Subspace Emissary", referencing how the Shadow Bugs make up the Subspace Army. The Poison Cloud hazard references how the Shadow Bugs take the form of purple snowflake-like particles, which can swarm over a character's trophy and assume their identity. Other trivia: This spirit's Trade-Off Attacks ↑ ability references the Shadow Bugs' ability to create a powerful doppelganger of a fallen trophy character in "The Subspace Emissary".
The source of all the various creatures in the Subspace Army, Shadow Bugs are embodiments of a primordial darkness extracted from Mr. Game & Watch. After Tabuu had him captured, it wasn’t long before he began his campaign against this world. On top of creating the various soldiers of the Subspace Army, Shadow Bugs can also be used to create false doppelgangers of fighters.
