Morton and his Koopa Clown Car represent Tatanga, a dark purple alien with fangs who pilots a hovering spaceship equipped with weapons. Morton starts the battle with a Super Scope, and the Ray Gun and Motion-Sensor Bomb items appear, referencing the weapons used by Tatanga's spaceship, which includes lasers and scattered bombs. The stage represents the Star Course, the second level of the Space Zone in Super Mario 2: 6 Golden Coins, which features Tatanga as its boss. The music track is a remix of the underground theme from Super Mario Land, Tatanga's debut title.
A spaceman of mysterious origin, Tatanga was behind the invasion of Sarasaland during Super Mario Land. Tatanga is protected by his powerful warship, the Pagosu, armed with laser beams and bombs. Mario was only able to stop him using his own plane, the Sky Pop. Tatanga then worked with Wario to try and get revenge on the plumber, but was again unsuccessful.
